Boxing Day Walk

Writer's picture: Hilda Van NettenHilda Van Netten

-6°C at home feels very different from -6°C in town, even though it takes only 10 minutes to get there. There was a bite in the air this morning as we walked along the lake.

Today's sponsor: mittens. I should have doubled up on my sponsors.

I managed to convince my favourite hiking buddy to continue exercising this morning. One day at a time.

As we walked along the harbour, the sounds of hockey pucks being slapped with sticks on the outdoor rink brought back many good memories. Not of hockey, but of skating on that rink. How fortunate we are to have ice that is free and accessible for all.

There's a certain charm to the back side of Cobourg's stores.

We were headed in a westerly direction to check out what work has been done in Cobourg's west beach. To get there, we passed by the Ecology garden with - be still my heart - our Brookside Youth Centre artists' signs. Some colours have faded a bit in the 10? years since we designed, built, painted and installed them. And, weren't we lucky to have chosen letter colours that didn't fade? Looking at this sign, I was reminded of one artist's bright idea to integrate a butterfly into the "E". I wonder if any of our artists have ever returned to Cobourg to see their signs?

Ted was telling me that the town is going to put more walkways in this area of the beachfront. I love that, for the most part, they have allowed it to remain in its natural state. I am sure many birds are happy about that too.

Lake Ontario had a gloomy, cold look to it this morning.

And, circling around, our other sign was still there, un-marred after all of those years. Maybe graffiti artists have a reverence for original art.

I'll end with a quote by Rachel Carson:

“The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities

of the universe about us,

the less taste we shall have for destruction.”
