Cut-and-come-again

Writer's picture: Hilda Van NettenHilda Van Netten

It's mid June and so far, the weather has been kind to our greenhouse plants. It takes a long time to build a greenhouse - thousands of tiny screws that need to go in the right places - and to fit it out so that it will work properly. The next thing on Ted's self-directed list is to create a shade cover and to install a fan. The 6 roof vents automatically open thanks to their cool gas-filled cylinders. But, we need to be here to open doors for more ventilation. One day last week, I forgot... oops! The hi-lo thermometer showed 50°C. Ouch! I fully expected to have bolting lettuces this week, but so far that hasn't happened.

Here's what the mesclun mix looked like before it was picked....

.... and here is the other bed just after it was picked. Cut-and-come-again. I love that principle. It will only work so long, but we'll see just how long so long is this year.

I am going to plant more seeds of this mix for a fall crop today.

There were 23 bags of mixed greens.

There were still enough peonies for 12 bunches this morning. Wild daisies made their appearance and were welcome in the bouquets.

Herbs are flourishing in the gardens this spring. The basil which overwintered is now blooming and adding to the beauty of the herb bunches.

I am hoping neighbours will enjoy the smell and taste that these gems bring to their day. Cut-and-come-again. The beauty of herbs. They keep on giving.
