Late Season Learning

We're getting near the end of our gardening experiment for this year. We've learned a lot. One thing is that Ted needs knee pads when picking beans. 😙 That man deserves a hug.

There were still 10 bags of green and black beans this morning to share. Here are the green ones and our last remaining yellow zucchini. Well done, zucchini plants!

If you scan the perennial gardens with your eyes, it would appear to you that there are very few flowers left. It is almost the middle of October. I was surprised to be able to rustle up 6 nice bunches of flowers.

They nestled nicely on top of the kale and Italian parsley bunches.

And, surprise surprise ..... radishes that were planted 23 days ago in the Vegepod are almost at their peak. Next week will be a big radish week. We've been learning a lot about succession planting. Hopefully, next year we will be better at it.

You might be wondering how much nutrition left the gardens this morning? Production is winding down, but the gardens are still contributing to our neighbours' good health.

  • 9 small bags mixed peppers & hot peppers

  • 3 bags of salad greens w/nasturtiums

  • 13 bunches of spinach

  • 3 bunches of Westland kale

  • 4 bunches of Italian parsley

  • 3 bunches of mixed herbs

  • 6 bouquets of flowers

  • 10 bags of beans

  • 1 zucchini

Total today: 27 lbs.

Total to date: 1025 lbs.

We were a bit late arriving at FareShare this morning: 9:45. Neighbours were waiting in chairs in the hall as we carried in our crates of fresh veggies and flowers to be weighed. Smiles and "good mornings" passing back and forth between us. One of the volunteers who lives about 5 km north of us summed up the morning for me: "I come here for community."
