Life is Good

Heavier items are starting to come on stream this week. It's taken us 20 years to figure out how and where to grow carrots. They seem to do well in the poorer, gravelly soil. Don't those herb bunches look cute? Nothing like a dill flower to add bling.

The mixed greens are doing well this summer. Last week, I took a bunch of greens to eat while camping. I was surprised at how long they lasted. A week. It's been the perfect summer for the gardens. I wish everyone in the world could say that.

Day lilies are a great cut flower - IF you pick a stem that has plenty of buds on it. Even though the original flower only blooms for one day, get it? day lily - others will open up in the vase.

Sunflowers! These guys self-seeded. I just moved them to safe spots along the edges of the gardens.

Even though Ted had next to no sleep last night, he made sure that our gardening buddy had a smile or two. Today we needed Ted's help in harvesting. We gave him the easy jobs like picking carrots and beets.

We like to make each bouquet fit for a queen. There were enough flowers for somewhere around 18 bunches this morning. Making sure every one of them gets their fare share is serious business.

I'd read about a French floral designer using mint in her bouquets. What a great idea! Our bouquets had an interesting complexity of scents this morning - the honey-like scent of goldenrods, dill and mint. Heavenly.

There they are, waiting to be loaded into the car.

One pumpkin and some winter and summer squash gave us some good weights. There was 76 lbs. of food and flowers this morning.

And, the one with no sleep was chauffeured to Fare Share. Life is good.

I'll end with this thought:

“Weeds are flowers, too,
once you get to know them.”
