Often very interesting places and people are tucked away in the corners of communities. Like Green Wood Coalition's Community Garden.
If you just arrived from another planet and happened upon yesterday's Summer Solstice Garden Blessing, you would have been in for a treat.
First, you would have had the opportunity to calm your body, being guided by a First Nations healer. Nice way to begin your time there.
An enthusiastic member of the board would have welcomed you to their shared space.
You would have been sweetly serenaded by a duo called Ladybird......
.... and had the opportunity to join a drumming circle led by the Port Hope Beats.
You would have noticed that the garden has some strong supporters in our community.
And, you would have had the opportunity to meet new and interesting neighbours.
Oh, and the flowers!
And, why is that man smiling? It has to be because he is savouring strawberry shortcake with whipped cream. It has to be. There was strawberry shortcake and whipped cream for all to enjoy and smile about.
If you were able to transport plants back to your home planet, there were plenty of cucumber plants free for the taking.
As you made your way home from this sweet event, you would probably be reviewing the folks you met there. One who shared having lived experience with drug addiction and human trafficking. One who takes photos of distant planets and galaxies and makes art with them. One who lived in his car for a long part of the winter, but now has precarious housing. One for whom making art brings back fond memories each time she looks at that art.
And, I think you will have taken back a t-shirt to remind you of just what you experienced in that garden and on that planet.
You might just come again.
