Sample Platter Hike

Jan often leads interesting hikes in and around the town of Port Hope. They are like a sample platter of everything Port Hope has to offer.

We started along one of the town's many walking trails, our shadows working hard to keep up.

Next we turned in a westerly direction along a quiet street.

And, south on an even quieter road and under the train tracks.

Not only did we catch some enticing glimpses of Lake Ontario, we got to feel its cooling breezes. Just perfect at the 5 or 6 km distance. Spring air coming off the lake. So refreshing!

I think this little guy is a tree swallow. When we stopped to have a snack and drink, a few of them entertained us by showing off their flying skills. Some of us opened our Merlin app, trying to identify other birds we were hearing. We even heard Bobolinks! Never did see them. Maybe they were resting in the grass after flying 20,000 km from South America.

A little history on the platter of this hike's delights. What a stately farmhouse!

This hike's subtitle could be - Bridges around Port Hope. Train bridges and.....

....abandoned bridges too.

Heading eastward towards town, we went off road again.

I was amazed that the lady on the right was on today's hike. Yesterday, she hiked from her home in the middle Cobourg to our place on Dale Road for a workshop. Then, hiked home again!!! I am guessing it was around 15 km total.

We all felt like we were on top of the world at the end of the hike. Or, maybe we were on top of the world.

There are some really interesting hikes coming up in the next month. A bigger sample platter - of the county.

Note to self: just go.
