Sometimes Hikers Eat...

.... and talk. Our Pine Ridge Hiking Club social events are beginning to come on stream again. Last week, The Mill Restaurant was the scene of our annual birthday celebration. That's where every woman who acquired a 5 or 0 at the end of her age this year was honoured.

I was asked to take some pictures and write about the event. The words were not coming like they usually do, so I took a leap and asked attendees three questions. I wanted to be inspired by where they have hiked and what they experienced when hiking. Here is what I asked them:

  1. How many countries have you hiked in?

  2. What is your favourite hike?

  3. Why?

And, below is how they responded.

"I’ve been fortunate to have hiked in about 10 different countries.

One of my favourite (and one of my most recent) hikes was in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, near Ingonish.

It was a beautiful day, I was with one of my favourite hiking partners and then, on reaching the top, the view was spectacular. A day to remember."

"Most of my hikes abroad have been in Britain while visiting my son who lives with his family there. Next summer I’m going back to the Isle of Wight. I have also hiked in Austria, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Iceland, Costa Rica, U.S.A., and, of course, Canada. Canada’s the best: all the Maritime provinces, as well as Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia."

Donna

Mostly, I hike near home. There are a few nice hikes that leave from my house. But, I have hiked in Florida, and in Quebec, the Maritimes, BC and the Yukon. My favourite hikes were in Tombstone Territorial Park in the Yukon. It felt like it could have been 1000 years ago.

Hilda

"Not too many - England, Scotland and Wales, Turkey, Morocco, Portugal.

Loved them all.

Enjoy diverse cultures, terrains and meeting new people on the hikes."

Yvonne

"I haven't had much opportunity to travel and hike but I have hiked in Canada, United States, England, Spain, Italy, Wales and Dominica. I don't really have a favorite hike since each and every one of those hikes offered something special, but if I have to choose one it probably would be either Italy (the Amalfi Coast) or Wales. So very beautiful, it took my breath away."

Rita

Favourite? That' a toughie - but since I've travelled from coast to coast in Canada then I would say around lake Louise in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Anytime you see a picture of Lake Louise you can identify it in a nanosecond - very impressive.

Rita

"I have never taken a hike trip, just Peter and I strolling in cities, mostly in Europe, but also in the US. Favorites: Paris, Seattle to name a few."

Murielle

"I have hiked in 11 countries.

My favourite hike was the Milford Track in New Zealand.

It was closely followed by other hikes in New Zealand - particularly the Abel Tasman Track.

The Milford Track is my favourite because of the varied terrain and scenery. Even though it rained/snowed most of the time, it has stayed in my mind."

Eva

"I think I’ve hiked in 7 countries.

New Zealand was my favourite.

The topography, vegetation, scenery were outstanding and stunning!"

Cheryl

"The most beautiful area I have hiked was in Kluane National Park in the Yukon. It was just breathtakingly beautiful and the views were just outstanding."

Jen

Happy Birthday to us!
