Google tells me that the driving distance between home and Vankleek Hill is 3.5 hours. Today, we managed to stretch that to 5.5 hours. I think it was worth it.
The Thousand Islands Parkway is lovely at any time of the year. There are many lookouts along the way and you never know what the view will be until you walk the narrow path.
Even though it was cloudy, the St. Lawrence still looked mighty.
We were thinking that all of the reds would be gone, but we were wrong.
Near Brockville, the sun started to show itself.
History was made at lunch today. This is the first time in our 44 years together that Ted ordered a healthier meal than I did. Oh no! This particular restaurant's specialty was Perch on a Bun. Neither of us had eaten perch for over 50 years. Ted had the perch and clam chowder. I thought that a breakfast would be fairly healthy. Hmmmmm..... those fries. Couldn't face up to them.
We had to do a U-turn - always the sign of a good adventure - on Hwy 34 north of Lancaster when we saw the sign for Glengarry Fine Cheese. These folks also sell cheese making supplies out of an adjacent building. Glengarry Cheesemaking. They sell everything from cheese molds to pasteurizers to rennet. Some cheese went home with us. Of course it did.
North and east of Lancaster there is a narrow, but very productive band of agricultural land. And, oh the farms there!
At times we could see the Adirondack mountains in the far distance.
We were wondering if the corn harvest would be finished in this area. Not so. Farmers were rushing to combine corn before the coming rains.
5.5 hours of driving and a bit of head-scratching and we found the visitor centre in Vankleek Hill. It is in the museum. Isn't that where all visitor centres are? And it was closed. But, it looks like a cute little museum, don't you think?
Tomorrow, we will head due north and into Quebec. After we go to the museum/visitor centre.
