Sylvan Glen - Fish & Flowers

Last Sunday, we drove around Rice Lake, pretending we were on a holiday. Today's adventure was to re-visit one of our favourite conservation areas, Sylvan Glen.
Ooohh Look! Marsh Marigolds are blooming!

There was a good frost last night. It looks to me like these dog-toothed violets are still recovering from the shock. They look perturbed. As we walked by them, I wondered if they would be open when we returned an hour later? What do you think?

There were around 15 cars parked next to the river when we arrived. As we walked on the Ganaraska Trail, along the river, we caught glimpses of fishermen in their chosen spots. I love watching fly fishermen. It seems like an impossible exercise to me.

In the cedar forest, the first fiddleheads were popping up.

The river is very silty after the many rains we've had this spring. We couldn't see any fish.

The bridge is still looking good. And so is my favourite hiking buddy.

I was wondering why all of the fishermen were wearing sunglasses? It's not that bright out. I got my answer from a gentleman who was fishing here: polarized lenses. He lent us his clip-ons so we could see the fish. Oh, the things we no nothing about!

I love the cross-hatching of the grasses in the foreground.

Here and there, there was the odd red trillium. Then, wowzers! A whole patch of them with....

.... these gems sprinkled in. I understand that this is a variant of red trilliums. Aren't they beautiful? I have never seen these before.

So, on the way back to the car, things were looking up for our fisherman. Do you see the splash of his fish? He lost this one, but...

... in a few minutes had another on the line.
It's nice to have a buddy who will haul out your...

.... catch!

Not only were things looking up for fishermen, but flowers were enjoying the rare sunshine too. Blood-roots all lined up in the sunshine on a tree root.

And, yes. Dog-toothed violets also opened up!
Astonishing. What a little heat and light can do.
