The Need is Great

At 4 a.m., I was woken up by what seemed like a large flock of birds, chirping loudly outside the bedroom windows. I couldn't sleep with all of that racket, so I went outside with the Merlin app and had it listen to them. Only 4 kinds of birds: American Robin, Black-capped Chickadee, Northern Cardinal and House Wren. I think they were all trying to outdo each other in the, "I am happy to be alive this beautiful spring morning" category.

It was still a bit dark sometime after 5:30, but the lights in the greenhouse came to my rescue.

This is our third week of harvesting the mesclun mix salad greens. There were 25 bags this morning. I imagine that when and if we get some sustained sunshine, the plants will begin to bolt and that will be the end of that crop. We have two further plantings in the garden, one of which should start producing next week.

Rhubarb is coming along nicely and we were able to give some thyme along with quite a few bunches of chives.

It was a little bit wet outside this morning.

Bleeding hearts make great cut flowers.

I may have to save this image as reference for a painting.

8 neighbours will be leaving Fare Share's warehouse with some extra brightness in their day.

When we dropped off today's harvest at 8:30, one of the staff hugged us and gave us an update on the ever-increasing need in our county. She also told us how Fare Share's staff and volunteers have been finding new ways to obtain food, i.e. Food Rescue.

It was gently raining again when we left at 8:40. Already there were 4 people lined up at the door in the rain, waiting for 9:30 to roll around. The need is great.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment

before starting to improve the world.”
