The Universe in a Basement

Writer's picture: Hilda Van NettenHilda Van Netten

This morning's light made the crabapples look like red stars in a golden universe. Hold on to that thought - it is going to tie in with the rest of this story.

Somewhere around 45 years ago Ted met this gentleman at Wakeley's scrapyard. Gabe Denis worked there and every time Ted brought in a load of scrap metal from the farm, he would be there, helping him to unload, telling him which pile each type of recycling needed to be dropped off at, and scrambling around the piles like an acrobat. Ted likes to reminisce that for many years he was scared of Gabe. He looked a bit scarey. Gabe is the poster child for the You Can't Judge a Book by its Cover category in our minds.

Today, we had the privilege of attending one of Gabe's art shows. Yes, an art show.

Someday, I will kick myself for not having bought this work of art. I believe it is titled, "Space Junk".

Gabe is a lover of astronomy.

He held it sideways so you can get a better view of the 3-dimensionality of the piece. It reminds me of a piece of art I once saw in the Jacksonville airport.

Walking into Gabe and Dar's home is somewhat like walking into Maude Lewis' home. Every surface is covered with art. Covered. Art and other artifacts like this bio written by an interested supporter of his art.

This might be my favourite image of the day. It feels like Gabe is a part of his universe.

He paints on a wide variety of surfaces - from saws to...

.... records. I love the idea of time and space together in one piece of artwork.

I think this may be my second favourite piece. I could look at it all day.

We said our goodbyes and headed for the car....

... but were called back in to see one more thing. A coffee table/clock. Sadly, my photo does not do it justice. Seeing it was a wow moment.

It was wonderful to see the universe through Gabe's artwork. The universe in a basement. Maybe it's a black hole.

✶✶✶✶✶

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe,

a part limited in time and space.

He experiences himself,

his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest,

a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us,

restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison

by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures

and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Albert Einstein

And a quote for Gabe:

“And,

when you want something,

all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Paulo Coelho
