“No man ever steps in the same river twice,
for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

This morning, a good friend came along for my Canton pre-hike. I've led this hike a couple of times in recent years. I thought I'd seen everything there was to see on that route, but my friend pointed out things I'd not seen before. That's life, isn't it?
When editing the photos I took this morning, there seemed to be a few threads:
Water - in the forms of a stream, a river and the trickle from tile drainage outlets.
Trees - apple orchards, forests and a pretend tree
Stones - houses and garages made of stone
We parked near the old Canton United Church and started walking west. It wasn't long before we passed over our first stream. There's not much ice left.
This hike is all on quiet country roads.
This neighbourhood has a high concentration of stone houses. Grain was being dried as we passed by.
Where Kellogg Road meets Loyalist Road, the apple orchards begin.
Some of the stone homes along this route are large and then there's this one. Just oozing charm.
And, if there just aren't enough natural trees and forests in the neighbourhood, you build your own tree.
Most of this route is relatively flat and very quiet.
Here and there tile drainage outlets are still trickling and getting creative.
On Sunday, we will rest where a bridge crosses the Ganaraska River. It's a great spot to stop for a drink and snack.
I'd never noticed this cute little stream that was slicing its path in the lowland. It looks like it might be leading to an old and forgotten bridge.
There were a few old brick homes to be seen too.
And, this hike would not be "this hike" if I didn't stop to take a picture of "this red door".
And, a close second .... this almost-red one. One of the principles of design is balance. "Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space." Getty
Accidentally, I achieved balance in this photo: the almost-red door, a big object, balanced with the teeny-tiny almost-red leaf at the bottom. Interesting how a big shape and a little shape can feel balanced.
Turning north again on Kellogg, horses were having a late breakfast.
And, more stone houses were looking stately.
The same tributary was crossed as in the beginning of the hike and we were back at the car. Just around 2 hours.
8.85 km
Elevation gain: 124 metres
On Sunday, January 15 hikers can park on the side of the road near the old Canton Church on the 4th line of Hope Twp., just east of County Rd. 10. What3Words co-ordinates: horoscope.bright.still Please bring along water and a snack. Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before our leaving time of 9:30.
