“They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world:
someone to love,
something to do,
and something to hope for.”
Tom Bodett
Hope is the thread in this post.
Quite a few months ago, Lindsey asked Ted to make some charcuterie boards for the camp where she works. That camp hosts retreats and conferences and even weddings these days. Years ago, if she'd asked this favour, the job would be done within the week. That ship has sailed. Yesterday, it was a good day and Ted completed the sanding and finishing. The wood came from our farm. Ted cut those trees down 25 years ago. Little did the wood know where it would go and who would eat from it.
Walking back from the shop, I noticed this hardy lettuce plant. It must have seeded down from last year's lettuces. It has survived the spring so far because it is nestled up to a rock. The rock retains the heat and creates a cosy little microclimate. Good to have rocks in your life if you need hope.
Cabbages don't mind a little frost. So far, this part of our gardening experiment is looking good.
And, last but not least: some of our wildflowers are starting to germinate! I thought that I'd made a mistake and allowed them to flood and rot. Be still my heart! Fragrant Hyssop. These babies are hoping to grow to between two and four feet!!!! They will have an anise scent. All that from these tiny plants.
I think they may be the most hopeful ones in this post.
Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well
but the certainty that something makes sense,
regardless of how it turns out.
