Following Our Noses

Writer's picture: Hilda Van NettenHilda Van Netten

There were some nice reflections of the city on Little Lake this morning as my camera and I went looking for morning-in-the-city. Ted was getting some much desired sleep. I wanted to see what it feels like to live in a city and to walk to get my breakfast. My destination? Hard Winter Bakery.

Canada geese, sleeping and stretching, were probably unaware of the fine mist rising from the canal.

In Rogers Cove some beak scratching was happening.

It’s interesting how, if the sunlight shines from the right angle, the black rails and hydro wires look white.

I love a city parks department with a long view. Planting oak trees next to the street. None of the staff who planted this tree will be alive when this tree is fully mature. Some future generation will benefit from its shade, the increase in wildlife living on it, and its sequestering of carbon. It seems to me that the long view is valued here in Peterborough.

The horticultural society says that a Garden Hero lives here. How beautiful!

I met another garden hero weeding the raised bed below. A young dad who wants to teach his kids about growing their own food, but the back yard is dedicated to an ice rink. Oh Canada! He told me about an area just west of where we were standing called, The Avenues. Apparently, there are a few homes there with vegetable gardens covering their front yards. I feel like I am on a discovery trail and random people step up here and there to point me to the next station.

And, there it is! Our sponsor: Hard Winter Baking. We’ve been following this young couple from when they first started with a stand at the farmers’ market, maybe 10 years ago. It’s one of those, if-you-build-it-they-will-come scenarios. Only this one is if you BAKE it, they will come.

It was a 40 minute walk to the bakery. I had $20 in my pocket.

When you drive, you see the world as a blur. When you bike, chances are you’ll see a lot more interesting things and meet a lot more people. But, when you walk… I’d never seen this funky wall of doors. I’ve biked by it around 20 times. And, interesting people? They keep on presenting themselves.

Back at the trailer, Ted was awake and interested to see what yummy things were inside the box. Don’t you love that label?

All thoughts of the fasting diet we’ve been on went out the window.

Two Hike Morning

7:15 seems to be my departure time these days. There were still some nice reflective puddles from yesterday’s downpour.

You have your daytime workers and your night time workers. Looks like this one was busy last night.

Even small lakes like this one are ever-changing. This morning, there was a hazy mist over the lake. I am guessing the humidity is near 100%. It felt like that this morning.

My destination was “The Avenues”. And foolishly, I thought I’d find it by memory. On the way there I came across this natural garden. It looks like the flowers are exploding from the front yard.

On this route, there are many remnants of Peterborough’s industrial past. The walking/biking trail has been cantilevered off this train bridge. We’ve crossed it many times this week.

I wandered around Dalhousie>Townsend Street areas which were a little bit sketchy. Quite a few encampments. But, interspersed were gems like this lovely garden. Those tall grasses look like a lawn sprinkler to me.

Wouldn’t this make a wonderful painting?

It looks like the lake is this fisher person’s private domain.

And, while one person was fishing for their lunch, others were on their way to one of the downtown farmers’ markets.

This jolly looking Quebecois boat spent the night at lock 20. Who knows? Maybe we will see them next month on the St. Lawrence.

Never did find "The Avenues". It was getting hot so I went home to see if Ted was awake yet. Nope. Bad night last night. Oh well, sitting in the shade on a holiday is not the worst thing to do.

Half of yesterday’s Hard Winter breakfast was calling to us to be eaten. Might even taste better the second day. After breakfast, we decided to explore a new path.

Sometimes the future crosses your path on a Saturday morning. Sustainable/fun transportation. Riding seemed to take very little effort for this lady. Do you see the dog?

We looped around the bridge on Maria Street and headed east. According to the map, the trailhead was on the first road going south. No signs. We did some sleuthing and figured it would meet up with an apartment building there. We asked and sure enough…..

Just go through the gap in the fence, walk along the back of the fence to the soccer field….

...... and voila! A beautiful path that led right back to our campground road. City and traffic all around, but you'd never know it.
