This is one of my favourite hikes to lead at this time of year. The roads are fairly quiet, there is only one hill of any significance and there is a multitude of stone houses to be seen along the way and some picturesque apple orchards too.
The late February sun was out in full force on this morning's pre-hike. Lots of cool shadows to be seen.
Along Kellogg road the stone houses started to appear.
There was very little traffic this morning. This grain truck was on its way to the elevators at Ganaraska Grain.
It wasn't long before layers were being shed. It's difficult to know what to wear this winter. Layers are always a wise choice on a hike. I'd already shed a layer a km before these ladies did.
We didn't see any evidence of pruning in this orchard.
It's interested what you see when you pay attention. Aren't those brick patterns beautiful?
Other things you might see on Sunday's hike are evidence of wildlife.....
.... and unusual trees.
There is very little ice left on the Ganny.
And, only a couple of snowbanks lingering from the last snowfall.
Tractors are awaiting spring planting season.....
... while some homes are holding on to that Christmas feeling.
I love the stark look of these hedges. They look like the walls of a fortress.
And, I could look at stone houses all day.
The Ganaraska River is the poster child for the word meandering.
Hmm..... maybe that will be our sponsor today: Meandering.
In two hours we meandered through one of the prettiest corners of Northumberland.
If you want to meander with me next Sunday, all you need to know is below:
