We're Trying

Gardening is not for those who need perfection. We've had verticillium wilt in our tomatoes since 2008. It's a virus that lives in the soil for up to 5 years. Our fix has been to rotate (doesn't work in our garden - too small) and to plant extra tomato plants. Some varieties are affected worse than others.

The garden didn't stop growing when we were away for a week. There was 1 ¼" of rain in the rain gauge when we arrived home. The rain coupled with last week's heat were good for some plants and not so good for others. Can you see the brown leaves? The wilt moves up the stalk throughout the summer.

Some of the tomatoes are suffering from sun scorching. In all our years of gardening, we've never had this problem.

Some cucumbers got really big and overripe. Oooops!!

We have been eating melons for a few weeks. There is still another week's worth of them. How wonderful! I was worried that they may have split because of the rainfall. It's been a great year for melons.

In the winter, there is nothing like pulling out a bag of frozen roasted cherry tomatoes to serve with a tourtière and some green vegetables. They don't look too pretty in the garden, but they will taste amazing in the winter.

There was enough to fill four roasting pans.

Our sponsor today is the colour red. There's a lot of it around today.

The balsamic vinegar in this recipe puts it over the top.

We are experimenting with having a late season crop of salad greens. They are growing in the spot where we harvested the garlic. Hence, the half-decomposed straw. It was placed there last fall.

One pumpkin is completely ripe. Isn't that colour beautiful??? It gets the seat of honour for now. In a couple of weeks, when a tomato cage is free, it will be hoisted up in the centre of the perennial garden. Sort of like an offering of thanks.

Fall is coming. And, winter will be tasty.

Oh, happy day! I think I heard them all seal.
