Harvest Hugs

Sunrise today was at 6:34. My alarm was set for 6 and by the time I was dressed and had set out the tables and supplies, this is was my view. I wanted to start early because our garden buddy is on vacation and I still wanted to have the food/flowers at FareShare by opening at 9.

Hmmm.... what to pick in the semi-darkness?

Beans! You can feel your way along the bean rows. I just pretended that I was almost blind. Whatever it takes. 🥴

By the time the beans were picked, it was easy to see the salad greens. The light still comes quickly. Sometimes it's nice to not have rain. The salad greens were very clean today.

I am pleased with this year's salad greens trans-plantings. We trans-planted 4 times throughout the spring & early summer. The first planting is history and we are now picking from 2, 3 and 4. There were 19 bags of greens this morning.

Because we started our pumpkin seeds indoors this spring, they are way ahead in the ripening game. Isn't this the loveliest colour of pumpkin? Sadly, we will not have pumpkins to give for Thanksgiving.

The crates borrowed from FareShare have been a godsend. Especially when picking heavy tomatoes and zucchinis and cabbages.

I was really looking forward to making posies today. I made a sample posy two days ago using late hosta flowers as the main structure and supports. My favourite annuals, Verbena Bonariensis are beginning to bloom. That's the purple flower near the bottom right in the picture below.

It's amazing how much the flower gardens give. Picking always encourages new growth. Oh, and if you scroll to the bottom of this image, you will see one of our new native wildflowers, Fragrant Hyssop. It's the elongated fuzzy purple one. They are really long-lived in a vase.

Doesn't this look like a hug? Hugs in a box.

And another. 18 flower hugs today.

Our sponsor today? Why not. Hugs.

“Hope is hugging me,

holding me in its arms,

wiping away my tears

and telling me that today and tomorrow and two days from now

I will be just fine

and I'm so delirious

I actually dare to believe it.”
