6:30 is a great time to get some weeding done in the garden. After digging out 6 5-gallon pails of weeds (and, what is a weed, right? maybe I should have left them there), I felt I deserved a break. The morning light was suggesting to me that some pictures needed to be taken.
Along the pathway to the pond, I was stopped in my tracks by this little beauty. I believe it is a Parasola plicatilis - Inky Cap mushroom. I need to go back and look at it in a few hours. Apparently, they melt into a gooey, inky blob. Right now, it looks like the epitome of delicateness.
There were a few others nearby. Doesn't it look like it is covered with snowflakes? Or, a really intricately crocheted shawl? Ooh, it's a little chilly this morning. Where is my shawl?
Frogs were hiding here and there around the ponds. I like the way it looks like this one is trying to be a symbol of communication. It is even sending some tiny ripples from it's right toe.
I heard a frog croaking in the small pond. Couldn't find it for a while.
Around the ponds, this plant has taken hold and is dominating some areas. Jewelweed. I LOVE this plant. If I ever accidentally pull up a poison ivy plant when hand-weeding, all I need to do is find some jewelweed, crush it, and rub it on my fingers. No itching or swelling from the poison ivy.
It looks like a gem this morning, backlit by the sun.
Last year, in a fit of downsizing, we dug out our lily garden. Ted couldn't bear to let the lilies die, so he placed them here and there around the gardens. This King Alfred is very happy fending on its own in the woods. And, it looks like those ants are glad it's there too.
I am hoping I'll be around when bluejays find the sunflowers. I'll need to set up the tripod that day!
Here and there, if you look closely, there are signs that the season is moving on. Looks like this maple leaf is playing shadow games. Maybe it's an illusion that fall is coming.
Whatever the case, it looks like we are ready.
I'm listening to The Tallest Man on Earth's "To Just Grow Away" song on Spotify - on repeat - as I write this post. Good song for a quiet morning.
We’re melting ruby hearts
a confusing trade
to burn the ore
to shape a blade
then to swing it low
beginners fate
to lose a skin
to just grow away
Like a rain, to help a river
but a river so hard to please
but I’ve grown to see the diamonds
you’ve thrown in just for me
We spent so many nights
just gathering stones
the silver tears
old sapphire bones
all the copper leaves
then dreamt, now true
look how they find their path
to cut right through
Like a rain, to help a river
but a river so hard to please
but I’ve grown to see the diamonds
you’ve thrown in just for me
Look when your hopeless child will figure
there are moments when hope’s not
only real when flagging far down a road
with an armful broken arrows
and no hand free for the bow
your kid will lose a battle
but your ways
will let him go
I lose my wish to drown
and aimless flee
what you’ve thrown to lose
is still right here with me.
