So, if you have sixteen eyes going on one hike, do you think you might see something interesting? Looks like they are already scanning the sky for whatever bird made that unusual sound.
This morning's adventure was a short jaunt east to the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. A cool breeze was blowing and the temperature was perfect for a walk in the woods.
Don't you wonder just what you might see here?
There are at least four board walks along the various trails. We saw schools of little minnow-like fish, some turtles and one that showed us how it camouflages itself by covering its shell with mud. If we hadn't seen the demonstration, we'd never know we were looking at a turtle.
Waterlilies were abundant and....
...... if you looked close, the insects were digging for buried treasures and getting covered in pollen. According to the University of Massachusetts, Water lilies have pools of fluid in the flower on the first day. When pollinators visit the flower, they frequently fall into the fluid where pollen is washed off their body and fertilizes the flower. ... Looks like that is what might be happening here.
Two of our sixteen eyes spotted these tiny flowers in the pond. Bladderwort. Bladderworts are a genus of plants that prey on planktonic organisms. Organisms are lured to the bladders with a sweet scent, and when trigger hairs on the bladder are brushed, the trap door opens and a vacuum force pulls the prey inside to be digested. Can you imagine all of that happening in such a small flower?
Bodies carrying sixteen eyes need to rest every so often. It's hard work doing all of that looking. These trails have nicely spaced benches along the way.
Maybe they were resting up so they could spot two fawns in the distance. Can you see them? Two of our sixteen eyes spotted the fawns and the mouth below those eyes whispered to the rest of us. "There are two deer!"
Zoom. There they are.
Zoom even more and aren't they just the cutest?
Don't you wonder if the right one is whispering into the left one's ear?
I think I heard it say, "Sixteen eyes. It took sixteen eyes for them to see us. Hmmmm... your ear smells good."
