Slow Living Experience

"There is more to life than increasing its speed."

Gandhi

For Father's Day, a trip to Lang Pioneer Village's Smoke & Steam Show was in order. From the moment we drove on site, it was clear that many people were planning on stepping back to a quieter time today. Cars were streaming in.

Getting steam engines to work takes a lot of fine tuning. You need to be very patient.

Today's sponsor is Slow Living: Slow living means living better, not faster.

I love the look of concentration on this jacquard weaver's face.

There are only two other Jacquard looms in Canada. I often wonder if this type of weaving will ever become fashionable again.

I had a lot of time to enjoy the weaver's shop. Ted had found an interesting farmer friend to catch up with.

There were a lot of activities throughout the day to everyone to enjoy. This slow tractor race was one that Ted was dying to see. We saw the tractors patiently waiting for their race and....

.... came back a half hour later to witness the race. The object is to be the last person back to the start line.

There is always an interesting indigenous Canadian area at Lang. Today, this lady was figuring out how to peel cedar bark to make cording. For some reason it wasn't working well for her. But, that didn't stop her. She was going to figure it out.

Down the street some chair caning was being demonstrated. Talk about patience!

Look how many steps need to be taken to achieve this pattern.

Everywhere you looked there were steam engines. Some not moving at all.

I was blown away by the levels of entertainment at today's event. In this house, everyone who visited got a tiny piece of rhubarb cake. At the cheese factory, there were samples of Empire cheese curds.

Apparently, this young man's task was to walk around the village carrying two pails. We saw him everywhere.

The wagon ride was slow and peaceful, giving us a great overview of what was happening in the village.

Sheep were slowly moving to the left....

..... and slowly moving to the right.

Food was to be found throughout the village.

Ted visited the dentist before he had a butter tart. Nothing like being prepared.

And, slices of pies were patiently waiting on the windowsill. At 2 p.m. they were going to be consumed in the pie-eating contest.

That probably wouldn't be slow.
