There Are Good Days....

.... and there was today.

We haven't traveled to the Lac Megantic area and thought that today might be a good day to do the Summit Drive. It started out great, with lovely views of the summits that we were going to see. This rest stop was next to a very long hill with a 14° grade. Transports were inching up the hill beside us.

This part of Quebec is sparsely populated and is known for its Dark Sky Reserve on Mont Megantic. If you look carefully at the hill on the right, you can see the observatory. It's a tiny bump on the horizon.

Our route skirted the bottom of Parc national du Mont-Mégantic. There were a few tiny towns along the way with pretty churches.

One, Piopolis even had a bunch of short hiking trails in their tiny town. Below is Lac Megantic seen from the end of one of those short trails.

This map looks pretty good, but it fooled me. It's missing many road numbers or names. Cell service was non-existant and our map book lacked many road names too. In the little town of Saint Sebastian, without warning, the road was completely closed. No mention of detours. We got thoroughly lost trying to find our way around the town. After asking a lovely lady who was sitting on her porch, we decided to abort the rest of the trip and head back.

It was good to be able to finally see Lac Megantic, the town we'd heard so much about. 11 years ago Canada's 4th deadliest train disaster took place there. Today, the town looks ultra modern with many new buildings in the downtown core.

Somewhere around 250 km was driven today and we are glad we went, but even more glad to be back in the cabin.
